Working on 9th Isle.

So Matt and I have been hashing out ideas for our epic short story anthology, tentatively entitled “Tales from the Ninth Isle”; alternate historical fiction involving Japan, the wild west, and a civil war stalemate.  Through the research process, we began reading about the Trail of Tears, which is probably the most fucked up chunk of American history, rivaling, obviously, slavery and the Fort Pitt smallpox scenario.

The cool thing though, is that for a brief 30 years, the Cherokee had set up an independent government with their own constitution and a three branched government, and had their own free press, featuring a 6-day/week newspaper called the cherokee tribune.  Here’s their article about the trail of tears, which will mark it’s 175th anniversary in less than a week:
