Miles Davis – Kind of Blue

Vinyl.

It’s definitely on my desert island top 5. I listened to this album all day, over and over again. Right now it’s off, it’s quiet. I’ve been thinking about Lolita. I read it years ago, but that one line is playing like a song stuck in my head.

“Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. ”

Does it get better than that?

As someone who’s always kind of wanted to be a writer, shit like this is daunting. How do you write something like that. How do you so perfectly introduce obsession, the whole body and mind obsession that the character feels.

I’m still stuck on names, obviously. I mean, Lolita, what a name. It’s a genre defining name.

I had a conversation with someone today about characters and method acting, inhabiting the character. I think i have to rewatch the movie, Lolita, to see how Jeremy Irons does it. He was something else in that movie. I recently found out that there’s an audiobook of Lolita read by Jeremy Irons. I have to get that.

I don’t know if I even liked the book, I just know that it was impressive, clearly.

Names. JK rowling had some really good ones, fun ones. Cornelius Fudge, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black. There’s a bit too much Britishness in those kinds of names for anything I would write. Same goes for Clarke, with her Gilbert Norrell, Christopher Drawlight, and John Childermass.

I’d have to spice my American raw with an ethnically diverse chunk of names; a little biblical thieving and regional flavor. I’ve always liked the idea of an African American named Solomon and a New Englander named Janek. I’ve used Alex Janek before, but never in anything good.

Kind of Blue might be my favorite album. I don’t know. I’ve been listening to that, Tom Waits “Alice” and Blind Melon’s self titled album for the last couple of days. Soon I’ll have a Nirvana day, and then Pink Floyd.

Floyd is a good name, my favorite character in True Romance.
